Are You Really Listening… or Just Waiting to Talk?

How to close the gap between thinking you’re a good communicator and actually being

The Big Perception Gap

Here’s a stat that should make you tilt your head: in a nationwide survey, 91% of adults rated their communication skills as “above average.”
If almost everyone is above average… then “average” must have packed up and left town.

Meanwhile, many employees report that their leaders lack critical communication skills. Translation: there’s a pretty big disconnect between how good we think we are and how good we really are—and one of the biggest culprits is hiding in plain sight:

We’re not really listening. We’re just waiting to talk.

The “Waiting to Talk” Trap

You know the moment—you’re nodding along, maybe tossing in a polite “mm‑hm,” but inside you’re polishing your next brilliant point.
Then they stop talking and… you’ve got nothing. Oops.

Why we do it

  • Ego: We want to sound smart and be helpful.
  • Excitement: We’re eager to share our idea.
  • Fear: If we don’t say it now, we’ll forget it.
  • Habit: We’ve practiced this for years.

The cost? Missed details, shallow conversations, and trust that quietly erodes over time.

Hearing vs. Listening (They’re Not the Same)

Hearing

  • Passive
  • Sound in, meaning optional
  • “Fake listening face” compatible

Listening

  • Active and intentional
  • Focused on meaning and emotion
  • Guided by curiosity

Think of listening as a skill you perform, not a background app that runs on its own. It needs attention, curiosity, and a little discipline.

Quick Self‑Check: Are You Waiting to Talk?

  • You interrupt before they finish.
  • You pounce on the first pause with your story.
  • Your questions are really segues back to you.
  • You lose the thread because you were scripting your reply.

If you said “yep” to a few of these, welcome to the club. Now let’s fix it.

The Practice Plan: 5 Steps to Actually Listen

  1. Pause Before Responding.

When they finish, wait a beat. That micro‑pause tells them you’re processing, not pouncing. It also gives you time to choose a better response.

  2. Mirror and Clarify.

Reflect a keyword back and invite more.

“You said you’re overwhelmed—what’s been piling up?”

  3. Ban the “Me Too” Hijack (for now).

Relatability is great—after they feel heard. Keep the spotlight on them a little longer than feels natural.

  4. Watch Your Inner Narrator.

Notice when you start drafting your answer. Gently return attention to their words, tone, and body language.

  5. Ask One More Question.

Before you share your take, go one layer deeper.

“What would a good outcome look like for you?”

7‑Day Micro‑Practice

  • Day 1: Use the one‑beat pause in every conversation.
  • Day 2: Mirror one keyword in each discussion.
  • Day 3: Replace advice with one clarifying question.
  • Day 4: Track interruptions; aim to cut them in half.
  • Day 5: Summarize what you heard in two sentences.
  • Day 6: Practice open body language and direct eye contact.
  • Day 7: Ask the “one more question” before you weigh in.

Pro tip: If you’re worried you’ll forget your point, jot a single keyword on a note. It quiets the urge to interrupt.

Bring It Home

Real listening isn’t waiting for your turn to speak—it’s giving the other person the sense that, right now, they’re the most important voice in the room.
Master that, and the gap between confidence and competence starts to close fast.
